Addressing hydrological problems with massive satellite data using Google Earth Engine in coll. with School Earth and Water

20-22 March 2024

3 days

Speakers:

Prof. Grégoire Mariéthoz (UNIL),

Dr. Fabio Oriani (Agroscope),

Saeed Mhanna (UNINE)

Venue : University of Neuchâtel, rue Émile-Argand 11 (room TBD)

Description

The aim of this course is to provide advanced knowledge and tools for the use of satellite remote sensing data for applications in hydrology. This will include knowledge about the available data, retrieval and processing of satellite imagery, and methods for computer-aided visualization and processing of remote sensing data. A large part of the course will revolve around the Google Earth Engine platform, which allows manipulating large amounts of remote sensing imagery (e.g. large domain, long image time-series) by leveraging cloud computing.

Program

Day 1 (20 March)

  • Physical bases of remote sensing: wavelengths, interactions between light and surfaces
  • Existing satellite missions and data
  • Image processing algorithms

Day 2 (21 March)

  • Data retrieval
  • Indices and thresholding techniques

Day 3 (22 March)

  • Supervised and unsupervised classification
