Biography

I received my Ph.D. in history in May 2016 from the University of Utah where I studied under the supervision of the late Prof. Peter Sluglett. In 2015, I was a research fellow at the New Europe College, Bucharest, and I then worked as a lecturer at Istanbul Medipol University (2016-2017). Since October 2017, I have been working as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of History at the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland, with Prof. Jordi Tejel for a project funded by the European Research Council, titled “Towards a Decentred History of the Middle East: Transborder Spaces, Circulations, Frontier Effects and State Formation, 1920-1946.”

Research

I am a historian of the Ottoman Empire, modern Middle East and the Balkans, with research interests in this connected region’s political and socio-economic history from the late nineteenth century to the interwar era. In particular, I study illicit exchanges, cross-border circuits and global commodity flows as a way of exploring broader questions on territoriality, violence and state formation. My current research focuses on the making of Turkish-Syrian border between 1921 and 1946, which I see as a charged site of local, regional, and global entanglements.
