Selecting your courses

Compulsory courses

The compulsory courses in the autumn semester are:

  • Microeconomic Policy
  • Behavioral Economics
  • Social Policy
  • Topics in Labor Economics
  • Applied Macroeconometrics

According to the regulations of the Faculty of Economics and Business, students must have a minimum grade of 4 in three of their compulsory courses to be admitted in the second term of the programme.

In the spring semester, the compulsory courses are:

  • International Economics and Trade Policy
  • Economics of Regulation
  • Political Economy
  • Topics in Development Economics
  • Applied Microeconometrics

Students who start the programme in February also have to a achieve a minimum grade of 4 in three of their compulsory courses to be admitted in the second term of the programme. 

Elective courses

You can choose 21 ECTS from the list of elective courses (please consult the study plan and the course description). You have the possibility to take courses at other Universities (e.g. Triangle AZUR, BeNeFri). However, this requires prior approval by the director of the program. If you wish to take courses abroad, please fill in the following form for every course you would like to take. In addition, you must earn 80% of your credits at the University of Neuchâtel. This implies that you can choose a maximum of 18 ECTS at other Universities.

Selecting a major

By default, students who complete the programme obtain a "Master of Science in Applied Economics". Students can request that their degree title include one of the two majors when they submit their Master thesis registration form. 

Please note that obtaining a specific major requires the completion of the set of courses associated with each major, and a master dissertation in the area of interest (please refer to the relevant study plan).  

Obtaining a "Master of Science in Applied Economics, Major in Environmental and Energy Policy" requires the following courses:

  • Global Public Goods
  • Public Policy Evaluation
  • Energy Economics
  • Environmental Economics
  • Innovation and Technology Policies

To obtain a "Master of Science in Applied Economics, Major in Data Science", the required courses are:

  • Data Management
  • Computational Thinking
  • Machine Learning
